August Underground (2002)

Imagine walking down the street and finding an unmarked VHS tape. Curiosity piqued, you take it home and pop it in. What starts off as two men screwing around with a video camera quickly transforms into an ultra-realistic torture sequence where the unidentified psychopaths tape their exploits as they torment and violate a woman tied to a chair. The devastation of your morals continues throughout the entirety of the footage, while subtly revealing the killer's shattered pasts via the interaction with their victims and each other.

Vogel is/was a teacher at Tom Savini's school, so he knows how to do special effects. Having said that, I was disappointed by this, the first AU film. Its sequel, Mordum, is far more engaging. It doesn't fail to shock but the sequel does that and a lot more.

an independent horror masterpiece! director Fred Vogel created something so brutal, shocking and completely frightening with almost no budget and a lot of creativity. "august underground" proved that horror could still grab you by the throat and kick your balls in after the painful "hollywood horror" we were all subjected to during the 90s. "august underground" has yet to be topped and probably never will. cheers to mr. vogel

If you are having second thoughts about watching this movie it s probably a good idea that you don't watch this. August Underground is the most disturbing movie I have ever seen. If you are not a die hard horror fan then this is probably not for you. I did like the way this was directed and it felt very real because of the way it was shot. I liked Fred Vogel and I think that he portrays a serial killer well.

my number 1 favorite movie of all time. Not only because I consider myself a fan of extreme cinematic violence, but because it completly changed my life. I don't know how to describe it. This movie was definatly my gateway drug into the underground horror circles I am an active member in now.

A success in horror filmmaking that is unheard of in the mainstream and misunderstood and underrated. I hated it before I had ever even saw it, but the hype is well-deserved. It's the most grueling film I've ever sat through, and I had to take several breaks. There are times that you think you're watching a real "snuff" film, and the result is shocking and sickening. It deserves praise for doing what I didn't expect - it portrays the serial killers as immature, ugly, obnoxious, despicable scum. This is the way they (and murder) should be portrayed, not the Hollywood route of glamorization.
