Au Hasard Balthazar (1966)

The story of a donkey Balthazar as he is passed from owner to owner, some kind and some cruel but all with motivations beyond his understanding. Balthazar, whose life parallels that of his first keeper, Marie, is truly a beast of burden, suffering the sins of humankind. But despite his powerlessness, he accepts his fate nobly.

Il culmine dell'ascetismo stilistico Di Bresson. Un film crudelissimo, nichilista e doloroso; l' asino Balthazar e' l'unico personaggio davvero innocente, circondato da un'umanita' mostruosa e degradante nella sua meschinita'.

Probably the most touching and moving film ever made - that it never descends into mawkishness is a testament to the genius at work here. The greatest of all animal films: this is a profound meditation that should be seen by all who care about film.

This movie was...beautiful. I can only equate it to an experience similar to life, and I have to say that Bresson is my new hero. Balthazar is this wonderful metaphor for so many things, and honestly, I just fell in love with him. Bresson made something that is far from mere on-screen imagery or reproduction of life. He has framed and edited life, like no other filmmaker that I've known of ever has. And the actors...they weren't even acting. They were just people, in a real world, being filmed. This film felt more genuine and tangible than a documentary. I'm at a loss, really.

Amazed anyone is rating this below 5 stars. Depressing at times? Sure, so is life though. Unlikable characters abound? Sure there are, again just like life. A great view enhanced by a short running time so as not to overstay its welcome.
