Arcadia (2017)

A provocative and poetic exploration of how the British people have seen their own land through more than a century of cinema. A hallucinated journey of immense beauty and brutality. A kaleidoscopic essay on how magic and madness have linked human beings to nature since the beginning of time.

Where it really scores is in Wright's instinctive, somewhat Lynchian feel for the unexpectedly disturbing quality that seemingly benign images of soil or folk costumes take on when they are slowed down or magnified.

Arcadia is a fascinating look at man's relationship with Mother Earth shown using archive footage from around the UK set to a modern score. An intriguing blend of folk horror and documentary combine to create an unusual, almost ethereal, story. Predominantly in black and white, we travel through the last 100 years, focusing on certain areas of the English countryside, in an unflinching journey that highlights our tender, yet often destructive, use of nature whilst showcasing our evolution, for better or worse. Featuring an original score by Adrian Utley of Portishead and Will Gregory from Goldfrapp, their music beautifully captures a plethora of emotions. Freedom, hope, despair and angst in particular. BAFTA winning Director Paul Wright has brought to the present a superbly crafted film about the future, making full use of our chequered past. Quirky, visceral and compelling, Arcadia is a thought provoking film that challenges attitudes and ideals.

While it's charged and witty, its messages are all over the place.

It makes for pretty tedious watching, though the harsher side of our treatment of animals and an eerie score from Adrian Utley (Portishead) and Will Gregory (Goldfrapp) give it an edge.

After a gentle introduction which could almost begin any straightforward look at the subject, things begin to get a little weird.
