Anna Christie (1930)

Old sailor Chris Christofferson eagerly awaits the arrival of his grown daughter Anna, whom he sent at five years old to live with relatives in Minnesota. He has not seen her since, but believes her to be a decent and respectably employed young woman. When Anna arrives, however, it is clear that she has lived a hard life in the dregs of society, and that much of spirit has been extinguished. She falls in love with a young sailor rescued at sea by her father, but dreads to reveal to him the truth of her past. Both father and young man are deluded about her background, yet Anna cannot quite bring herself to allow them to remain deluded.

This film is a must-see for people interested in feminist/queer studies. It raises provocative questions about class and gender, which makes this film way ahead of its time...Garbo's acting, as usual, is phenomenal.

i love everything...flimwork,garbo,story about a seafaring swede as her dad and love of her irish drunk....very good!

Garbo received her first Oscar nomination for this second version of the play, which MGM advertised as Garbo Talks! Her first line of dialogue is memorable: Gimme a viskey, Ginger ale on the side, and don't be stingy babee.

Garbo is great, but Marie Dressler stole the thing.

A young woman who used to be a prostitute finds her estranged father who is a sailor and works for him. Then she falls in love with another sailor. There's really one reason to see this and that's Greta Garbo who plays the title character. She, along with the three main supporting cast, members elevates the material and the often stage-y purely perfunctory direction. There have been better films made with a similar subject before and since. But none of them have Greta Garbo in it though.
