Old sailor Chris Christofferson eagerly awaits the arrival of his grown daughter Anna, whom he sent at five years old to live with relatives in Minnesota. He has not seen her since, but believes her to be a decent and respectably employed young woman. When Anna arrives, however, it is clear that she has lived a hard life in the dregs of society, and that much of spirit has been extinguished. She falls in love with a young sailor rescued at sea by her father, but dreads to reveal to him the truth of her past. Both father and young man are deluded about her background, yet Anna cannot quite bring herself to allow them to remain deluded.

It was a great choice for Garbo's first talkie.

Interesting in that this is Garbo's first Hollywood talkie, in which she famously asks 'Give me a viskey'. Beyond that, the production is quite stagey and stilted, as was common with most of the first sound films. Hard to believe it's based on a play by Eugene O'Neill. Intriguingly, there was also a German version shot at the same time with a different cast around Garbo, in much the same way 'Dracula' was filmed in Spanish and English. Should interest fans of early cinema as a film touchstone more than entertainment.

Marie Dressler is a revelation in Anna Christie as she is so funny and she steals every scene she's in whereas Greta Garbo is memorable, but her transition from silent movies to talkies was frankly a bit rough as her performance here is too theatrical. The movie itself is much less interesting in its second half, but much funnier and more memorable in the first half. It has its moving scenes and very well developed characters but a static approach leading to a good, but flawed film.

The thirties were a time when film truly surprised which wasn't necessarily the case in later decades and Anna Christie is an example of a good film from the era. Spend a Sunday afternoon with it.

Garbo's oscar nominated performance, in his first talkie movie, it was a real and magnetic performance at the time that today is one of the most powerful performances by an actress ever. A magnificent story and a melodrama masterpiece.
