Old sailor Chris Christofferson eagerly awaits the arrival of his grown daughter Anna, whom he sent at five years old to live with relatives in Minnesota. He has not seen her since, but believes her to be a decent and respectably employed young woman. When Anna arrives, however, it is clear that she has lived a hard life in the dregs of society, and that much of spirit has been extinguished. She falls in love with a young sailor rescued at sea by her father, but dreads to reveal to him the truth of her past. Both father and young man are deluded about her background, yet Anna cannot quite bring herself to allow them to remain deluded.

Like Greta Garbo, and in this film she has great screen presence & memorable lines. The story is of little interest though.

You wait a painful 16 minutes until Ms. Garbo finally makes her entrance, but oh my, it's a beautiful one. Her first talkie, she doesn't even show signs of anxiousness in having to build her voice's popularity to match her images'. A cool, collected performance that presents the closed-off, cynical, young Anna in an appropriate way - and then the issue of her past is confronted. Excellent example of good cinema!

Garbo's oscar nominated performance, in his first talkie movie, it was a real and magnetic performance at the time that today is one of the most powerful performances by an actress ever. A magnificent story and a melodrama masterpiece.

Greta Garbo's earliest "talkie" movie. It was ok. I liked her feminist approach to life, rejecting both her father and her boyfriend's attempts to control her...to possess her. But the end seems contrived and even Garbo, who is usually so subtle, was over dramatic.

This film is a must-see for people interested in feminist/queer studies. It raises provocative questions about class and gender, which makes this film way ahead of its time...Garbo's acting, as usual, is phenomenal.
