Stroszek (1977)

Bruno Stroszek is released from prison and warned to stop drinking. He has few skills and fewer expectations: with a glockenspiel and an accordion, he ekes out a living as a street musician. He befriends Eva, a prostitute down on her luck and they join his neighbor, Scheitz, an elderly eccentric, when he leaves Germany to live in Wisconsin.

One of the best movies I have seen in a very, very long time. It is vivid, true and sad. It depicts the clash of two cultures and the tragedy of having runned yourself into a corner. I think this is a movie everybody should see, mainly because of Bruno S., but also because we always should listen to those that are not as lucky as we are.

I was curious as this is the film Ian Curtis watched before taking his own life. I found an incredibly touching film...Herzog's take on pursuit of the American Dream. Character oddities allow for some humour in an otherwise tragic tale. It's hailed as one of the greatest films ever made and I can see why.

Herzog in the midwest in the 70's. the build-up and ending of this movie; the last series of scenes are masterful. Bruno S. is perfect.

GREAT film. If you have not seen Herzog's work this film will make you want to see all of them but I would work my way from the beginning of Herzog's work. The story behind Bruno S. (look it up) should be enough to make you rush out and go rent the film.
