Stroszek (1977)

Bruno Stroszek is released from prison and warned to stop drinking. He has few skills and fewer expectations: with a glockenspiel and an accordion, he ekes out a living as a street musician. He befriends Eva, a prostitute down on her luck and they join his neighbor, Scheitz, an elderly eccentric, when he leaves Germany to live in Wisconsin.

The most disturbing film I have ever seen, Werner Herzog's breakthrough 1977 black comedy disguised as a domestic drama/adaptation of Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" without all the prevalent socialist undertones is a tale of how hard it is to live in America...or any place at all, especially after you've been institutionalized for years and know no conventions. This film is not a typical comedy, with jokes all abound - it tells you something through those frozen Butterball turkeys, those cars going around in circles, German prostitutes who know a lot of English, bird repossession, and dancing chickens that maybe life in America isn't so bad, even if it is tough as hell for an immigrant to assimilate into. This film is not recommended to anybody under 15 - there is some language and a lot of disturbing content, especially the ending sequence. And who would've known that this guy made Grizzly Man?

This film attacks the American dream's stature in the best way, and is masterfully captured and portrayed all around. Herzog's trademark humor and attention to seemingly unimportant detail is quite prevalent.

Yes, Ian Curtis. If I had epilepsy, watched this, and listened to Iggy Pop's The Idiot. I would've hung myself as well.
