Stroszek (1977)

Bruno Stroszek is released from prison and warned to stop drinking. He has few skills and fewer expectations: with a glockenspiel and an accordion, he ekes out a living as a street musician. He befriends Eva, a prostitute down on her luck and they join his neighbor, Scheitz, an elderly eccentric, when he leaves Germany to live in Wisconsin.

The most disturbing film I have ever seen, Werner Herzog's breakthrough 1977 black comedy disguised as a domestic drama/adaptation of Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" without all the prevalent socialist undertones is a tale of how hard it is to live in America...or any place at all, especially after you've been institutionalized for years and know no conventions. This film is not a typical comedy, with jokes all abound - it tells you something through those frozen Butterball turkeys, those cars going around in circles, German prostitutes who know a lot of English, bird repossession, and dancing chickens that maybe life in America isn't so bad, even if it is tough as hell for an immigrant to assimilate into. This film is not recommended to anybody under 15 - there is some language and a lot of disturbing content, especially the ending sequence. And who would've known that this guy made Grizzly Man?

i definitely feel like it warrants a few more viewings. i don't feel like i can quite capture all of the nuances of this film in a review, but suffice to say it has cemented herzog in my mind as one of the great filmmakers

I was curious as this is the film Ian Curtis watched before taking his own life. I found an incredibly touching film...Herzog's take on pursuit of the American Dream. Character oddities allow for some humour in an otherwise tragic tale. It's hailed as one of the greatest films ever made and I can see why.

That ending was amazing. One of Herzog's best.

One of the greatest examples of Herzog doing what he does best. It's funny, it's horrific, it's absurd, it has one of the greatest endings in film history, though it doesn't have Klaus Kinski in it. One of my very favorites films of all time. "We have a 10-80 out here, a truck on fire, we have a man on the lift. We are unable to find the switch to turn the lift off, can't stop the dancing chickens. Send an electrician, we're standing by."
