Animal Factory (2000)

Suburbanite Ron is spoiled, young and not overly worried about the marijuana charges leveled against him. But, after being made out to be a drug dealer, he faces a five-year jail sentence in San Quentin State Prison. Physically frail and unaccustomed to his rough surroundings, Ron is primed to fall victim to sexual predators and bullying guards – that is, until he's befriended by Earl, a veteran inmate who finds meaning in protecting the vulnerable new kid.

Quite faithful adaptation of Edward Bunkers "inspired-by-real-life-experiences" novel of the same title with Buscemi on the helm. The prison life is shown in its ruthless reality and paraoina (about getting played, raped or worse) is nicely portayed. Dafoe hits the mark as an aging prisoner taking the young "fish" under his wing and showing him the ropes of survival. The end is falters a bit but otherwise this is solid indie film making.

An above average prison movie. Furlong is awesome in it as the teenage dealer caught up in a prison for much more violent inmates. The relationship between him and Dafoe is facinating given the environment.

Hardly groundbreaking, but I do love me a good prison flick. Animal Factory was directed by an actor (Steve Buscemi) and it shows because it relies almost entirely on the players to work. Virtually every aspect of the film is proficient but also slightly underwhelming with exception of the acting which is nearly perfect. Dafoe in particular turns in one of the most complex performances of his career.

It's raw, and real, but low key and not nearly as brutal as some other prison movies out there. Being one of Steve Buscemi's earlier works as director/actor, it is still a strong piece of work.
