Animal Factory (2000)

Suburbanite Ron is spoiled, young and not overly worried about the marijuana charges leveled against him. But, after being made out to be a drug dealer, he faces a five-year jail sentence in San Quentin State Prison. Physically frail and unaccustomed to his rough surroundings, Ron is primed to fall victim to sexual predators and bullying guards – that is, until he's befriended by Earl, a veteran inmate who finds meaning in protecting the vulnerable new kid.

This is definitely one of the best overlooked prison movies out there today, and I mean seriously overlooked most people haven't even heard of it! Steve Buscemi directs this movie which was adapted from a novel by Edward Bunker, who himself spent most of his life in and out of prison. So we got a director who knows the business, a writer who's been to prison, a great assembled cast, and a very harsh and realistic look at prison which makes for a great movie for those of you who like to see the "behind bars" type of movies.

Buscemi's directing blends hard-hitting visual qualities with great emotional energy.

Hardly groundbreaking, but I do love me a good prison flick. Animal Factory was directed by an actor (Steve Buscemi) and it shows because it relies almost entirely on the players to work. Virtually every aspect of the film is proficient but also slightly underwhelming with exception of the acting which is nearly perfect. Dafoe in particular turns in one of the most complex performances of his career.

Great movie, loved the performance and realism from everyone. Just gritty enough and not too dull like most prison movies. The handpicked actors were almost perfect, yes, even Tom Arnold fit a good representation of a middle-upper class father who can't help a son at a time where certain countries just decide to get tough on crime, sometimes the wrong crimes and the wrong people. Steve Buscemi directed it and it shows, he's a very experienced actor who knows a thing or two about pulling a good performance out of gritty/funny roles.
