Animal Factory (2000)

Suburbanite Ron is spoiled, young and not overly worried about the marijuana charges leveled against him. But, after being made out to be a drug dealer, he faces a five-year jail sentence in San Quentin State Prison. Physically frail and unaccustomed to his rough surroundings, Ron is primed to fall victim to sexual predators and bullying guards – that is, until he's befriended by Earl, a veteran inmate who finds meaning in protecting the vulnerable new kid.

There's nothing wrong with this; it's well cast, well acted and well scripted, but it's very average because it never really reaches different depths. A bit one-dimensional.

Animal Factory (2000) - Willem Dafoe (who blew my shit away in Boondocks Saints) and Edward Furlong (the "hasta la vista" kid-companion of Arnold in Terminator 2), team up in a movie about a kid who goes to prison for selling pot and winds up under the protection of one of the old timers. Both Willem and Edward were awesome in this movie. And the supporting cast of characters is real as hell. The prison itself, closed five years before the movie was shot, was haunting and added to the electrical current that flowed through this movie. The story, the writing, the directing, the acting ? very good. The relationship between Willem and Edward is complex as each struggle to maintain; the older man fights his attraction to the kid while the younger tries to keep his dignity in a place where everyone wants his ass. And the ending is a surprise! This movie had me on the edge of my seat. Steve Buscemi directed this film. He?s directed another one of my favorites: Big Fish.

This Steve Buscemi directed crime drama is not of the same calibre as say, Shawshank, but it offers some originality and is much more easily digestible.

This is definitely one of the best overlooked prison movies out there today, and I mean seriously overlooked most people haven't even heard of it! Steve Buscemi directs this movie which was adapted from a novel by Edward Bunker, who himself spent most of his life in and out of prison. So we got a director who knows the business, a writer who's been to prison, a great assembled cast, and a very harsh and realistic look at prison which makes for a great movie for those of you who like to see the "behind bars" type of movies.

An adequate drama for those who like spending time watching people doing time. Incorporates most of the usual elements which make prison life such an interesting subject including attempted rape, racism and escape plans. Nonetheless, I got the impression that it rushed through these key aspects in order to keep the length condensed. This film almost exists as a summary or overview of the incarceration experience rather than a compelling narrative. Consequently, many of the film's aspects are not developed and thus lack impact despite their violent and disturbing nature. Also, characters and their interaction with each other are so one-dimensional that you don't really have the opportunity to like, dislike or understand anyone's personality (apart from maybe the attempted rapist....not hard to dislike him). Only for excessive fans of prison dramas but 'Prison Break' season one, 'The Green Mile' and 'Shawshank Redemption' should still take priority.
