Amira & Sam (2014)

Sam, a soldier who had served in Afghanistan and Iraq, meets Amira when he visits her uncle, Bassam, who had served as Sam's Iraqi translator. Bassam and Sam have a special bond due to their time together in the war. Initially Amira does not trust him because he was an American soldier and her brother was killed by a bomb from American troops in the war. Sam's cousin, Charlie, asks Sam to help him with illegal hedge funds unbeknownst to Sam at the time. Amira is staying with her uncle Bassam since her father died. She sells bootlegged films on the street corner but is forced to stay with Sam after getting busted; immigration officials begin pursuing her. As the film progresses, Sam and Amira fall in love.

An excellent New York love story. Perfectly cast and genuinely sup rising throughout. Unlike anything I've seen in a long time. The scene's between Starr and Shihabi in Sam's small Staten Island apartment particularly, will live long in the memory for their charm and the effortless like-ability of the leads. Will look forward to whatever Sean Mullins does next, but in the mean time I'll be watching this one again.

Just saw this movie tonight, it was awesome! Funny, sweet, touching romance, not like the usual romantic comedy, much better. I laughed out loud almost the entire movie, but got a bit teared up a few times as well. Very realistic, down-to-earth believable characters. Acting was top notch as was directing, writing, cinematography, does not look or feel like a low-budget indy. Fantastic film, can't wait to see it again!

This movie was phenomenal. The intricacies and parallelism that was shown time again and again throughout the movie was so cleverly laid out. Love the homage to in the bridge scene. Both leads did a wonderful job creating a natural, organic relationship. Worth watching many times!

So well done. NYC authenticity an attraction in itself. Hoping for a sequel because these characters have more to say.
