American Ninja (1985)

Joe Armstrong, an orphaned drifter with little respect for much other than martial arts, finds himself on an American Army base in the Philippines after a judge gives him a choice of enlistment or prison. On one of his first missions driving a convoy, his platoon is attacked by a group of rebels who try to steal the weapons the platoon is transporting and kidnap the base colonel's daughter.

It's like watching G.I.JOE with real people. And I'm totally biased so I shouldn't even be rating this. I've had an insane love for this movie since 1985. Ninjas are just so fucking cool! And this one has red, blue and yellow ninjas training in their secret base. Pure awesomeness! And what other movie could you see a ninja blow up a potted plant with a laser fired out of his glove? That alone earns five stars.

Super Dooper kickass fight sequences, including the obligatory triple sumersaults, corny Japanese accents and high testosterone macho action. Heh, I was 17 and a fully fledged Ninja wannabe! The sequels were total sh!te.

A pleasant surprise served with a heaping spoonful of guilt on my part, "American Ninja" is as kitschy and goofy as all get-out, but damn it if I wasn't entertained throughout every moment of its steely-eyed, testosterone-soaked running time. God bless Michael Dudikoff. The guy clearly can't deliver lines all that well, but he doesn't have to! Half of this movie is just him Ryan Gosling-ing at the camera and cast, and it works well enough, damn it! Why Chuck Norris and Steven Seagal are household names and guys like Michael Dudikoff aren't will forever haunt my dreams. The guy's not an Arnie, Sly or Van Damme-tier action star, but he's a Norris/Seagal-level presence at the very least. I'd be glad to accompany him on another rib-cracking, arrow-deflecting journey through the jungle. What's that, you say? There's four more of these movies? Why, thank you, reader. I'll keep that in mind.
