Alex & Emma (2003)

Writer Alex Sheldon must finish his novel within a month. If he doesn't, he won't get paid. And, if that happens, angry Mafia types to whom he owes money will come looking for him. In order to expedite things, Alex hires typist Emma Dinsmore and begins dictating his novel. The book is about a doomed love affair between a character similar to Alex and a character named Polina Delacroix. But, as Alex falls for Emma, his work takes a different turn.

I found this movie to be suprisingly funny. It's like how I would write or interact with people (I suppose) as a listless, somewhat witty, a little creative, and a bit lazy to start writer. I also have the perspective on life that the best possible idea for a girlfriend is one that you have a practical friendship with, that you should just find one of the female friends you like and sort of promote them because the relationship has so much substance. I like that view.

I'm not into the "Love Story" movies typically, but this one got me. It's an original movie, with an awesome plot. And I cried at the end, so that counts for something.

I liked the part where Emma asks Alex what his last book was about. It's about "the story of a man who's frightened of commitment and yet so desperately in love with a woman he's afraid it might kill him. It's a comedy." -Sadly, I can relate. haha When he's asked what his new book is about, he says "it's about the powerlessness of being in love and how it devours the insides of a person like a deadly virus." Emma: "Another Comedy?" Alex: "yeah" -Sadly, I can relate to that, too. I only wish I could have come up with those words. In another part of the movie, Alex says he's "just a writer. I don't know what to do to show you how much I love you. I only have words. That's all I have." -This is the best part of the movie, I think. Yah, I know it's a little mushy, but if I could have someone feel that way about me...and if I could reciprocate it because THAT is key, I'd be the happiest person in the whole wide world!
