That was actually pretty dope. Great intro to these characters, that helps you invest in them. A lesson a lot of low budget horror needs to learn.

...if you think you are going to be witnessing something in the vein of your typical death and destruction flick like THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW or 2012, you will probably be horrified by the depravity on display.

Half-decent horror alert! Eli Roth co wrote, co producedand stars this, so you know it is in good hands. Although not a classic, it certainly has a lot of gore and some genuine chills. We follow some tourists (Roth being one of them) in Chile, when a strong earthquake strikes, followed by a number of aftershocks....and possibly a tsunami. The trouble is, that in the town where our heroes are, also has a prison full of rapists and murderers that have got loose, thanks to the earthquake. Aftershock does take a while to get going, but stick with it as once the quake hits, it pretty much non-stop. I guarantee that the final scene will stay with you for a long time after the film ends...

Irwin Allen and Eli Roth had a baby. Very rarely does a movie like this make me feel bad when someone dies, a talent that Roth has in most of his writing. The violence and drama is very visceral! However, a sluggish start makes it hard to connect with the seemingly-abrasive characters for a good while.

Anyone who follows me twitter @acsullivan knows I got a chance to watch Aftershock today. I have to say, I enjoyed it. I think the critics are way off on this one. Nicholas Lopez isn't trying to cure cancer or score an oscar. I think this disaster/horror hybrid flick turned out great. I think he spent enough time on act one character development that you actually do feel for the characters when things go south during and after the earthquake. I feel the budget, cast, marketing and distribution model all make perfect sense for this genre flick. Well played Weinstein Company.
