i saw this as part of a film noir season i think, really liked the setting, jason patric was good.

James Foley slowly tautens the tension and turns up the erotic heat, shading this lowlife love-crime story in vaguely depressed shades of gray and burnt-out brown.

It’s a pungently atmospheric little sleeper, and one of relatively few genre flicks to portray a mentally unsound protagonist as a recognizable human being—someone who really just has one particular screw loose, such that you might not notice unless you happened to stumble against that particular joint.

Nobody wrote crime like Jim Thompson, and honestly maybe nobody wanted to. There's no femme fatales, hardboiled white-knight PIs, or gritty urban landscapes. Instead the dames are dumb yet tricky, the guy are dumb and wish they could be tricky, and the landscape is usually blasted rural Texas, or the badlands in between the highways. His noir is darker than dark and says more about human nature than a dozen other writers, it's also bloody hard to get to the screen. After Dark, My Sweet though is one of the best(along with The Grifters) and may just nail the author's voice better than anybody. This isn't the crime film you want if you demand action, but if slow burn character moments, cool writing, and great acting(including a career best performance from Patric) are your cup of tea, grab this movie and add it to your hardboiled collection.

This is the real thing from start to finish.
