When middle-aged Kata realises that her life will only be complete if she has a baby of her own, her longstanding-but-married boyfriend Joska refuses to comply. But by developing an unlikely friendship with the angst-ridden teenage orphan Anna, who is also involved in a controversial relationship, Kata discovers aspects of herself, and her role as a woman, that have gone unexamined throughout her entire, lonely life.

This is a beautiful and subtle film about female friendship and the insidious ways female oppression is woven into the fabric of daily life of Hungarian communist society. Maybe, though, that limits the film: this still seems more relevant, insightful, and timely then just about any other film I've seen in recent years about about women, labor, and maternal yearnings. (It certainly is much smarter and more nuanced than a film like Waitress.) This is one of those films that sinks in wonderfully after you watch it. Marta Meszaros deserves to be much better known.
