Zinnemann shows a knack for suspense and moral ambiguity that he unfortunately abandoned in his later Oscar-mongering prestige pictures.

The first act is the best part about this post-WWII potboiler. After Van Heflin's big secret is revealed (too soon), the film becomes more of a melodrama. Still, it's well shot, and Heflin and co-star Robert Ryan are in fine form.

Unique noir that instead focuses on a bank job or a femme fatale, this story deals with a potential war crime. My boy Robert Ryan plays a crippled war veteran stalking a war hero who has the perfect Suburban life (played by Van Helflin). This film exposes the guilt and faultless conviction of the war hero who has some rust on his array of war medals. The last half hour of the film is a desolate bout as Heflin and Ryan are caught in a chase through Los Angeles, and the scumbags and broken-hearts they encounter truly add dimension to this film.

Fred Zinnemann maintains an excellent atmosphere of suspense in this gripping noir featuring Van Heflin and Robert Ryan embroiled in a deadly cat and mouse scenario.
