well done and quite gripping.....an early effort by zinnemann, featuring the very young janet leigh.........

Un vétéran de la Seconde Guerre voit sa paisible routine menacée par un soldat de son ancien régiment revenu se venger d'un mystérieux incident. Ce type de prémisse aujourd'hui banale peut facilement déraper, mais dans "Act of Violence", elle est exploitée avec beaucoup de lucidité. On présente un univers où il est difficile pour le spectateur de prendre parti. Chaque geste, chaque issue pourrait s'avérer légitime. La force du film réside justement dans son profond réalisme. Personne ne vient magiquement justifier tel ou tel acte, trancher le bon du mauvais. Ce qu'on voit, ce sont des pauvres types abimés qui tentent de gérer leurs démons comme ils le peuvent, donc souvent très mal. Les performances sont vraiment persuasives et la courte durée du film accélère la dégringolade. Un film sombre, pessimiste, mais vrai.

fantastic noir about a mans actions during WW2 coming back to haunt him. Robert Ryan is fantastic as always as the heavy, and eveyone else fits in nicely. starts off with a bang and the menace doesn't let up till the end. Recommened.

Unique noir that instead focuses on a bank job or a femme fatale, this story deals with a potential war crime. My boy Robert Ryan plays a crippled war veteran stalking a war hero who has the perfect Suburban life (played by Van Helflin). This film exposes the guilt and faultless conviction of the war hero who has some rust on his array of war medals. The last half hour of the film is a desolate bout as Heflin and Ryan are caught in a chase through Los Angeles, and the scumbags and broken-hearts they encounter truly add dimension to this film.
