Absentia (2011)

Tricia's husband has been missing for seven years. Her younger sister Callie comes to live with her as the pressure mounts to finally declare him 'dead in absentia'. Tricia is reluctant, always holding out hope, but Callie is practical and wants her to move on. As Tricia sifts through the wreckage and tries to move on with her life, Callie finds herself drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house.

Absentia subverts expectations as you think you're watching a ghost film, but it turns into a monster movie. Or is there an explanation for all this? The images on the screen make you question whether you can trust what you see. It is a creepy, moody horror film good for a dark Saturday night.

Billed as a "horror" film, Absentia is more of a Thriller of sorts. The meandering storyline deals with missing persons, extreme emotional wear, stress and anxiety, "black holes" in time and space and spiritual phenomena. The film itself is not exactly creepy or even terrifying as the box art will lead you to believe, as much as it is interesting and thought-provoking. For those looking for something a bit off-kilter or off-beat from what they're used to watching, Absentia might just be their bag.

Absentia is a very effective low budget chiller from writer/director Mike Flanagan who not only crafts an interesting tale of missing people and what might happen to them but, also touches on the emotional struggle of those left behind......there is nothing better than a slow movie that really has you hooked, because only then can it really get you to feel and care for the characters, and "Absentia" manages to do just that.... a must see ...
