Absentia (2011)

Tricia's husband has been missing for seven years. Her younger sister Callie comes to live with her as the pressure mounts to finally declare him 'dead in absentia'. Tricia is reluctant, always holding out hope, but Callie is practical and wants her to move on. As Tricia sifts through the wreckage and tries to move on with her life, Callie finds herself drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house.

GREAT movie! Super scary, not the standard, gory, shock-effect, would-be horror movie, but a movie that creeps up on you. There's a 'real' monster somewhere in the movie, but even though you hardly see it till the end (and even then it's briefly), the thing (whatever it is), doesn't matter. The atmosphere is just.. freaky.. On of the most horrible movies I've seen, resembling Insidious in terms of ambience. A must see!

Gently paced, with a haunting atmosphere and at times quite scary. Simple premise, good acting and efficient use of a low budget. Not a slash and gore pic; not torture porn; just good indie drama with chilling moments not overplayed.

Amazingly absent from cinemas this is a well plotted and brilliantly low budget but ambitious Horror film. The idea of turning the monster under the bridge adage into a real social fear and making the new urban environment become engulfed by folklore Horror, is a well played idea. Its also great how the film chose the less is more approach in regards to its shadow dwelling beastie. A real surprising treat that has the style, trappings and imagination of Indie films like Donnie Darko and matches them up against moments of enticing (and realistic) human drama's. Ambiguous and then some.

Very well done indie horror. Original character-driven story with subtle effects is another example of how a lower budget film can still deliver. Well worth a look. Partially funded via Kickstarter.

One of the best truely independant films I've seen in a while, and in the horror genre no less. It is quite the quiet piece, but it's pacing makes it all the more effective. My only issue is that the production value here is obviously not something you are likely to see on the big screen. It did have that straight to release quality in some ways, plus the acting was not too great either. Otherwise, it is actually quite brilliant with it's execution for what is here. It definitely has some echo's of inspiration from David Lynch, but more clear in it's story.
