A story of real adventure, shifting focus and main characters, living out the story in a unique way. As well as the insane combat scenes, which until this film were non-existing in this sense. The details around the clothing, buildings, and the breathtaking landscapes playing with the sunlight, a pure delight to watch. Worth to mention is Roy Chiao´s incredible role as the master abbot of a Hindu temple, proud and shines with an enormous aura, creating a mystical religious superman.

Heavily spiritual predecessor to the likes of Crouching Tiger. Good cinematography overshadows most everything else. Give it a look, if you're patient. Does have a slightly jarring climax.

True lovers of House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon should definitely watch this movie, despite it's crushing 3 hour length.

It's a little on the slow side, taking a full hour to get to the first sword fight. But if you can handle the running time, get ready for a philosophical and deep film full of beauty. The camera shots, the landscapes, the action is all so smooth and dream like. Definitely not for the casual martial arts or wuxia film watcher. An influence for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as well.

This is to THE greatest of all martial arts/wuxia movies. Sure, the pacing is slow but that's intentional and appropriate. (Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns have a slow rhythm too.) Director King Hu was a master and the psychedelic/religious climactic fight scene has to be seen to be believed.
