This movie, much of it set in Florence (where Lucy and her aunt are promised a 'room with a view'), is an (almost two hour long) painting. From the Arno and the idyllic Italian countryside to the gorgeous Helena Bonham Carter, who looks like the subject of a pre-Raphaelite painting, every element, every brushstroke, of this film is perfect. This film is pure and heavenly romance. My favorite Merchant-Ivory, and one of my favorite movies of all time. I don't recommend watching this film every day, though, unless you actually live in such transcendent surroundings.

A gorgeous rendering of the book. An outrageously good cast. A romantic comedy with wit and poignancy. I was in heaven for two hours.

This is one magical piece. The eloquence and old English conduct shine through with the awe inspiring performance by Helena Bonham-Carter and Julian Sands. Been a period piece fan ever since, but this one still tops the British wave.

I watched this movie when I was in high school, and it has been my favorite since then. Then I read Foster's novel in college. It's so touching. I made several video clips from it, and watched them again and again.
