Elaine May's directorial debut still makes for cherishable comedy viewing precisely because she eschewed the modish flash her former cabaret partner Mike Nichols brought to his movie-making.

I like that this dark comedy is rated G, actually quite light for a dark comedy. I have fond memories of watching this movie with my sister Liza and Mom at our church in the 70's; it has my favorite movie theme = Redemption. Walter Matthau and Elaine May are hilarious. Matthau is a rich guy who loves being rich and whose talent is only living rich and biggest problem is that he has carbon on his $15,900 Ferrari auto valves. He runs out of money. Realizing he has no skills, he borrows $50K from his extorting uncle to front him until he can marry a wealthy woman to save him. So, he finds Elaine May who play a very wealthy, clutzy botanist, courts her in days, marries her and plans her death. He discovers surprisingly that he has skills and they are in fact suited for each other, she finds confidence to be a botanist her dream and he finds that in her helplessness he can has skills, he can manage life. This movie has not been released on DVD yet I had to go old school and rent it at Saltzers in Ventura and reconnect my VCR to play it.

A New Leaf that represents the more miraculous achievement in wresting from domestic torment a plausibly happy ending. Or rather, an ending that is realistic about the compromises required to be happy.

Why have I not heard of this movie before?! Walther Matthau was great as a scheming playboy & I only just found out here that Elaine May directed & starred.A VERY good movie & a great ending.I loved it
