A Long Way From Home (2013)

Joseph and Brenda have done what many only dream of and retired to the South of France to live out the rest of their days as if they were permanently on holiday. But retirement is not what Joseph imagined, and when he meets a young, attractive woman, Suzanne, everything he thought he knew about himself and his world is turned upside down.

Adroit performances abound in this ex-pat tale. Archipelago DP Ed Rutherford helps add to the Joanna Hogg-y feel, but this lacks the disquieting insights of Hogg's work.

Charlotte O'Sullivan 06 Dec 2013

Unfortunately, director Virginia Gilbert doesn't trust us to handle the chill winds and opts for something that has no temperature at all.

Leslie Felperin 05 Dec 2013

Rutherford does lovely things with the Provençal light, but Fox is too much of a cipher to care about.

Alan Laidlaw 09 Dec 2013

Gilbert's full length debut isn't a complete shambles but where passion and tumult should exist, there is only a misguided intent to be found.

Trevor Johnston 02 Dec 2013

What seems at first an almost mundane affair becomes a devastating, unsentimental portrait of quiet desperation
