A Kid Like Jake (2018)

On the eve of the admissions cycle for New York City kindergartens, Alex and Greg Wheeler have high hopes for four-year-old Jake. The director of Jake's preschool encourages them to accentuate Jake's gender expansive behavior to help him stand out. As Alex and Greg navigate their roles as parents, a rift grows between them, one that forces them to confront their own concerns about what's best for Jake, and each other.

Though its vibe is often too meandering, A Kid Like Jake shows that even the most accepting of environments aren’t immune to the vulnerabilities and worries coursing through any well-intended parent’s soul.

I admit the cast was the draw more than the topic. Seeing each actor in a new role some like Clair are favs. Jim deserves more movie work just not in this one. No chemistry, no flow, just cheesy. There are good moments, thanks to good actors but doesn't save the film or give the topic the attention it deserves. Just seemed like a vanity piece, not sure if it was the script or editing but could have been on the Hallmark channel.

An unusually realistic, emotionally gripping story with a top-tier cast.

All these CIS critics... have we learned nothing? Where are the trans/non-binary critics? This movie is amazing. It really bothers me that so many critics are missing the point. No, we don't see Jake that much but isn't that the point? I'm not sure how someone can watch this and miss THE WHOLE POINT. Danes is amazing. Dowd gives a delicate and hilarious performance. It's heart breaking and moving. Give it a shot. Stop letting these majority members dictate our narrative and what is and isn't our stories. They have no idea. They should have a seat and listen for a change.

Watching adults complicate an already complicated situation is good theater, but what A Kid Like Jake needed more of was childlike wonderment. With it, it could have been a film with deeper impact, not just a conversation starter.
