An engaging Chilean drama that recalls Pedro Almodovar's best work. Trans actress Daniela Vega is remarkable as a waitress/singer coping with both the sudden death of her lover Orlando (an older married man who left his family for her) and his family's often hostile treatment of her. Hers is a struggle not just for acceptance within Orlando's family circle but for her identity as a whole, and newcomer Vega is more than up for the challenge. It's a dazzling, star-making performance that should help garner this moving film plenty of awards buzz later this fall.

Raw and simple, A Fantastic Woman is simply very good, Sebastián Lelio treats us to a polished story about struggles that a trans person might endure, it does that subtly on so many layers and so many perspectives from the scope of love and grief. Daniela Vega who plays Marina is a joy to watch, she effortlessly sways between emotional spectrums with style and grace, the sequences are well thought out and extremely effective in delivering the story, Leilo through his film draws a portrait of bravery and fearlessness and it's just amazing to watch.

Daniela Vega stars as Marina, a transgender singer who has a day job as a waitress. She lives with her boyfriend, a man in his late 50's, who suddenly drops dead one night of an aneurysm. The film follows her attempts to come to grips with this tragedy while dealing with people that won't let her do so. I thought this was a powerful film that fiercely asserts the basic dignity and humanity of it's protagonist under conditions that fight to deny both. Vega does an amazing job, conveying so very very much just with her face.
