The plot is straightforward, but the film's tone and style supply an artful mix of sensations. The lighting is colorful and heady...The film's rhythms gracefully accompany her endeavor, rising and falling with every setback or tiny, incremental victory.

Even though it sometimes feels as if the director is needlessly stringing viewers along and leaves some of the narrative's story threads unresolved, this intriguing Oscar nominee from Chile delivers a fresh twist on "the other woman" genre, one that's somewhat unexpected and features previously unexplored plot devices. With a fine debut lead performance by Daniela Vega, the story captivates the further one gets into it, leaving viewers wondering how it's all going to end up. It's unfortunate that some of the aforementioned tidying up is left unattended to, though, for, if it had been, this might have been a groundbreaking cinematic release.

An engaging Chilean drama that recalls Pedro Almodovar's best work. Trans actress Daniela Vega is remarkable as a waitress/singer coping with both the sudden death of her lover Orlando (an older married man who left his family for her) and his family's often hostile treatment of her. Hers is a struggle not just for acceptance within Orlando's family circle but for her identity as a whole, and newcomer Vega is more than up for the challenge. It's a dazzling, star-making performance that should help garner this moving film plenty of awards buzz later this fall.
