A Bridge Too Far (1977)

The story of Operation Market Garden—a failed attempt by the allies in the latter stages of WWII to end the war quickly by securing three bridges in Holland allowing access over the Rhine into Germany. A combination of poor allied intelligence and the presence of two crack German panzer divisions meant that the final part of this operation (the bridge in Arnhem over the Rhine) was doomed to failure.

Most realistic account of History with great actors getting beat by the Germans. No Rambo or Arnie here!

Even though the Allies lost the battle( Operation Market Garden) it is still one of the best war movies I have ever scene.

What a monster of a movie. With all the newer movies filled with cgi, one is simply blown away by the massive effort it took to coordinate the air drop scenes. One scene has at least 20 planes in it. Real ones. Someone needs to remaster the sound, the music is a victim of the era the film was made in. I wonder why I hadn't seen it sooner. Micheal Caines best film, Gene Hackman's worst, Anthony Hopkins at his most typical self, Redford has too minor of a role, but I'll stop there.

In many ways, the first real modern war film. It is one of the first films to wipe away the glossy, half-accurate glory of war. ABTF begins the saga of gritty, realistic war films.
