The film doesn’t know how innocent it wants to be. Establishing shots of Manhattan’s 1998 skyline arrive in the cutesy form of a colorful diorama, just like Mr. Rogers’s show, but that gesture feels utopian and unearned, not to mention a little boring.

(Mauro Lanari) A film so manipulative that it is of rare perniciousness. Nothing else to say.

But Hanks, especially, keeps the trolley on the rails, and everything Heller is after in this film comes together in a remarkable final shot depicting Rogers alone in the TV studio, having made another friend.

The main drawback to A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood -- directed by Marielle Heller ("Can You Ever Forgive Me?"), from a script by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster -- is that it tends to leave you craving more about Fred Rogers, and less about Lloyd.

Joi Childs 10 Sep 2019

Personable, emotional, and packed with humor, this film – and the spirit of Rogers – holds on to your heart and refuses to let go.
