Tense, tense, tense! This film throws you right into the heart of the turmoil of living in Belfast in the 1970s. It opens your eyes in an unbelievable way, so that you turn every corner and hide down every alley along with this young green soldier. Not knowing who is friend and who is foe, which are hostile lands and which are not, you have to grit your teeth, and hope along with Hook. It is hard to imagine how it felt living in Belfast during these troubled times, but this film gets you as close to imagining as possible. Gritty, tense often savage, but above all humbling and highly credible. Another film that may fall under the radar for many this year, but will no doubt become a highly rated British classic over time.

71 is an excellent must see action drama. It I'd relatively novel using the period as a backdrop to essentially an escape and evasion story. Looked authentic right from the start. Must see.

The story of the movie is so incredibly good that makes it more like a history lesson. This film captured the mood of that time and successfully depicted all the hatred and compassion. Jack O'Connell is quickly becoming one my favorite actors. Outstanding performance on his side. Compelling story and brilliant piece of film making.

We've seen a lot of war films set on bigger stages than the streets of 1971 Belfast, but this, for a Brit growing up in that era is so much more visceral. I could write another 1000 words of hyperbole but who wants to read that, so I'll do it in 10. Amazingly immersive cinematography, utterly authentic story arc, Jack O' Donnall perfect. 5 stars

Seen it. Fantastic!! Should be required viewing for every junior high boy who thinks shootem-up-videos are like real war or police service. They would think twice about volunteering for war.
