Even as it's grounded with real-life humour, this is a deeply important film that plays like a yearning cry to cut through the silence and piety.

Tan's screenplay — from a story he developed with his mononymous producer, cinematographer and co-editor, HutcH — doesn't entirely avoid cliche. But the integrity of the performances, the believability of the relationships and the authenticity of the milieu keep it from spilling over into mawkishness.

1985 is a miracle of a film, one that pays tribute to an era, a generation past, and a culture that fueled the progress of LGBTQ civil rights for decades to come.

Steve Murray 26 Sep 2018

The movie doesn't hold any surprises, though it's a useful reminder for younger members of the LGBTQ community who don't know what a scary, sad time the 1980s were.

"1985" puts together 2 terrible things: Christmas with your family and HIV. (too soon?) Sorry, beside the terrible joke I want to say that I loved this movie. Its simplicity contrasts with the complexity of that time and disease. The B&W and the photography works very well together and the lead actor give a hell of a performance. Very difficult not to like a little pearl like this one.
