Zorns Lemma (1970)

Zorns Lemma is a 1970 American structuralist film by Hollis Frampton. It is named after Zorn's lemma (also known as the Kuratowski–Zorn lemma), a proposition of set theory formulated by mathematician Max Zorn in 1935. Zorns Lemma is prefaced with a reading from an early grammar textbook. The remainder of the film, largely silent, shows the viewer an evolving 24-part "alphabet" (where i & j and u & v are interchanged) which is cycled through, replaced and expanded upon. The film's conclusion shows a man, woman and dog walking through snow as several voices read passages from On Light, or the Ingression of Forms by Robert Grosseteste.

One second shots of street signs starting with "A," "B" and so on, cycling through the alphabet, with a set of (unrelated?) images gradually replacing the individual letters. With an equally experimental prologue and epilogue, it lasts for an hour. It's hypnotic at times and not as unwatchable as it sounds, which may be why it has become semi-legendary avant garde effort; it's one of those films for cineastes to see once just to scratch it off the list.

A true avant-garde film that is hard to watch for the untrained eye. The film is expressively edited, featuring numerous implications and nods to factors of filmmaking - time, technicalities, philosophies - to create a profound experience divided in three sections. The contrast of visuals paired with the narration in both the first and last sequences creates an out-of-body consideration, mixed in with the realist symbolism of the long second sequence.

This is borderline mind control. It accomplishes exactly what it wants to, but...well, I'm not sure I'd recommend this. It's a long, challenging hour.

An intellectually challenging, exhausting, exasperating experimental film investigating how we create meaning: in film, in images, in language, in patterns, all toward an aim of showing that these mental hardships can lead to a kind of peace.

One of the most FANTABULOUS structuralism films ever! (I'm not sure Frampton would love the word FANTABULOUS)
