Woyzeck (1979)

Having fathered an illegitimate child with his lover, Marie, feckless soldier Franz Woyzeck takes odd jobs around his small town to provide some extra money for them. One job is volunteering for experiments conducted by a local doctor, who puts Woyzeck on a diet of peas. This serves to drive him close to madness, and the discovery that Marie is involved in an affair with the local drum major exacerbates the situation. Pushed too far, Woyzeck resorts to violence.

The least effective of the Herzog/Kinski films in my opinion. Not a bad film by any means but without the magic of Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, or even the flawed Nosferatu. Kinski, however, gives his best performance of all in this. Eva Mattes is wonderful, too.

Descent Herzog/Kinski collaberation about a soldier that is on a diet of only peas, his wife is cheating on him with other soldiers, and his peers in the army mistreat him. Eventually Kinski's character goes completely mad and starts stabbing people, great acting from Kinski and the direction from Herzog seems a little unfocused but it works.

Woyzeck is, if possible, ever more mysterious by the time we reach the end than it is at the beginning.

Extremely moving and well executed. Eva Mattes full-heartedly deserved that award for it, too. You have to chew on it for a while, and rewatch it.

This is definitely my favorite film of Herzog(so far). I was just blown away by the performances of Klaus Kinski in this one, one of the greatest performances by an actor! Also, I really loved the script of this film, and there are some great shots in this film. Also the great murder sequence!
