Woyzeck (1979)

Having fathered an illegitimate child with his lover, Marie, feckless soldier Franz Woyzeck takes odd jobs around his small town to provide some extra money for them. One job is volunteering for experiments conducted by a local doctor, who puts Woyzeck on a diet of peas. This serves to drive him close to madness, and the discovery that Marie is involved in an affair with the local drum major exacerbates the situation. Pushed too far, Woyzeck resorts to violence.

Descent Herzog/Kinski collaberation about a soldier that is on a diet of only peas, his wife is cheating on him with other soldiers, and his peers in the army mistreat him. Eventually Kinski's character goes completely mad and starts stabbing people, great acting from Kinski and the direction from Herzog seems a little unfocused but it works.

I was mildly disappointed with this one. Adapting a play confines Herzog mostly to room interiors, and keeps him away from the raw, natural vistas which he always captures so brilliantly. The action is a bit stiff, with less sense of spontaneity. And the bulk of the film does little but fill in details of characterization -- it essentially just marks time until the climax. Luckily, the film is rather short and thus doesn't turn tedious. In any case, no actor portrays madness quite like Klaus Kinski. Reason enough to see this.

A strange but fascinating approach to rendering such a horrific tale, as Herzog both deploys the wacky and darkly surreal to depict his demented lead.

Not my favorite collaboration of Kerzog/Kinski but is still quite a film. Klaus Kinski does a great job (as usual) in this role but the film as whole doesn't exceed other Herzog films of the times like 'Aguirre', 'Kaspar Hauser', 'Stroszek', or even 'Noseratu'. Still a devastating story and brilliant work...

a brilliant drama, shot so that all the emotion from the actor, however restrained or drained or mad, is culled out all the way. The murder scene is one of the most profoundly moving in any movie I've ever seen (a combo of, surprisingly, slow-motion, high-power strings, and Kinski's face, a fresco of life's horrors)
