Wonder Women!: The Untold Story of American Superheroines (2012)

Explores the concept of heroic women from the birth of the superhero in the 1940s to the TV and big screen action blockbusters of today. Heroic role models are important in childhood development, yet there are a dearth of these for girls. It provides a rare example of a female heroine who doesn't require rescue, determines her own missions, and possesses uniquely feminine values.

Should prove irresistible to comic-book fans and pop-culture mavens, even if it is misleadingly selective as it argues that young girls mostly lack strong women role models in popular entertainment.

Riveting documentary about the history of heroic women in popular culture and their potential in the future.

Missed seeing this at the 2013 Cleveland International Film Fest, but shortly after, found it playing on Independent Lens on PBS. Perhaps it was a shortened version that I saw. It briefly explores some other heroic female tv characters, but 85-90% of it focuses on Wonder Woman. This doc reveals her strong comic book roots, years of domesticated tales, the inspiration the character provided to the feminist movement, her return as a powerful role model with feminine values in the hit '70s tv show, and the scarcity of female superheroines at the movies in a market with a surplus of superheroes, but conceivably with many bias still providing roadblocks. The interviewees are all quite riveting and the graphics help the story along very well.

Between the captivating clips and the enlightened talking heads, this is one nonfiction feature that, were it just a bit longer, would be worthy of breaking away from the festival circuit and enjoying regular theatrical runs.

It's the personal stories that really got to me.
