This adaptation of Flannery O'Connor's novel is John Huston's best film for many years.

Mediocre acting and a plot that loses focus keep this from being a late-Huston masterpiece. Other than that, though, it's a really fascinating if surreal portrait of faith and desire, one that becomes neither didactic nor corny. That's an accomplishment.
