I saw this as a child (thank you Alex Cox and Moviedrome) and place it squarely as one of the key thing that drove me to seek out the more interesting and out of the way bits of culture. It remains an amazing film, full of unforgettable moments and endless quotable dialogue. God knows how many times I've seen it now.

A weird, good movie. I love Flannery O'Connor.

The movie I didn't know I needed. Finding charm in the grotesque. Brilliant dialogue and exceptional performances.

It is adapted from the fine first novel by Flannery O'Conner of the same name and it is the only time an American director has successfully translated the late O'Conner's haunting prose. Completed in 1979, it is also perhaps the most ballistic of Huston's late-period films.

Something of a religious surrealist vision of American Evangelicalism, Wise Blood is a fascinating film with some fine performances and haunting themes.
