Thematically rich, subtly bizarre, tragic and engaging in practically every fashion. Brad Dourifs' performance is fantastic and the teaming of Flannery O'Connor's source material with John Huston's direction is a force to be reckoned with. All in all, a harsh but fair treatment of religion melding with human depravity.

"I'm member and preacher to the Church where the blind don't see and the lame don't walk and what's dead stays that way". If that is not enough to pique your interest, the exquisite performances, clever dark-humor and layers of symbolism may just do it. Sad, funny, telling.

How disappointed one must feel when one's doctrine of "think for yourself" is followed blindly and without question. There are no easy answers, especially in Bruce Springsteen's favorite film (see it anyway).

later period john huston was usually spot on (man who would be king, fat city, the dead), but for all the film's cleverness, i never found a true story. maybe it wasnt the kind of film that was supposed to have a true narrative structure, but the ending really seemed to fall really flat.
