Will Penny (1967)

Will Penny, an aging cowpoke, takes a job on a ranch which requires him to ride the line of the property looking for trespassers or, worse, squatters. He finds that his cabin in the high mountains has been appropriated by a woman whose guide to Oregon has deserted her and her son. Too ashamed to kick mother and child out just as the bitter winter of the mountains sets in, he agrees to share the cabin until the spring thaw. But it isn't just the snow that slowly thaws; the lonely man and woman soon forget their mutual hostility and start developing a deep love for one another.

Chuck's best movie. Overall the story is a bit by the numbers but you forget about this because Chuck is so real as the title character. The best moments are in the beginning during the cattle drive. You really get the feeling that these guys are cowboys. Watch this movie, now!

Bit of a hidden jem. Probably the best performance by Charlton Heston and great support from a strong cast including Bruce Dern and a wonderfully demented Donald Pleasence. Also is the introduction of Lee Majors in his pre bionic days. A real must for the western fan.

One of the best classic westerns from the golden era of the genre in my opinion. Charleton Heston is at his epic best in this drama pitting a loner cowboy against His devotion to his job as a line rider and his human instinct to help a beautiful young mother and her son stuck n the mountains trying to get to California. Donald Pleasance does a great job as the crazy self-proclaimed man of the word and his dysfunctional family. A fantastic film well worth an evening with the family or alone.

Gritty period realism and an excellent Heston performance make this a good choice for a rainy day viewing. Look for cameos by Ben Johnson, Slim Pickens and other classic western character actors.
