Wild Man Blues (1997)
Wild Man Blues is a 1998 documentary film directed by Barbara Kopple, about the musical avocation of actor/director/comic Woody Allen. The film takes its name from a jazz composition sometimes attributed to Jelly Roll Morton and sometimes to Louis Armstrong and recorded by both (among others). Allen's love of early 20th century New Orleans music is depicted through his 1996 tour of Europe with his New Orleans Jazz Band. Allen has played clarinet with this band for over 25 years. Although Allen's European tour is the film's primary focus, it was also notable as the first major public showcase for Allen's relationship with Soon-Yi Previn.

I was looking for more of an insite into the man. Not necessarily about filmmaking, but more about the man. Maybe about the music for which he's tour performing, but you don't get that here. The travel footage is mostly circumstantial shots of hotels and breakfast and papparazzi. This is fun for a Woody fan, just seeing the cantankorous old fart hanging out. The performance footage starts out quick and choppy but then the camera lingers more and you get to see some great performances out of the group. Woody especially is quite surprising in a couple of solos bringing great emotion out of the clarinet, an often-annoying sounding instrument. Stay tuned to the end to see Woody wrestle with his still-unsupportive parents to understand how easily a man become as weird as Mr. Allen.

Really excellent documentary on Allen in his free time. Hilarious, informative, and entertaining.

There's no reason to watch Wild Man Blues unless you're a huge Woody Allen fan, and even then there's no big insight into Allen's life that isn't hinted at in his own films.

Extremely entertaining documentary. As a huge fan of the Woodman, and since the DVD's have no features whatsoever, this behind-the-scenes glimpse is priceless. Woody is a fascinating person, he's funny, witty, and actually gets a little pissed now and then. Also he makes great music.

I heart Woody Allen so as you can imagine, I LOVED this documentary. I never saw it when it was originally released and I've had it on my dvr for almost 9 months until finally checking it out last night. Wow. Thank you, again, Barbara Kopple. While this film may not have the haunting power or social relevance of Harlan County USA or American Dream, it still is remarkable on many levels. First and foremost, this is the most intimate interaction that I've ever seen with Woody Allen(and chances are that we'll ever see). The banter between the Woodman and Soon-Yi was fantastic and the scene with Allen's parents was both hilarious and humbling. An absolute must-see for any fans of Woody Allen.
