Best student film I've ever seen. An impressive debut by Scorsese. All the great elements of his later films are here: the experiential quality, the snappy dialogue, the religious themes and imagery...

Great first feature length from Scorsese.

An effective debut from Scorsese and I prefer it to some of his other films. It certainly suffers from the same boorish macho indulgences as works like Raging Bull. Here, at least, Keitel's character is revealed to be an immature fool.

I've seen this called a dry run for Mean Streets, but I found the style so different, even if some themes reappear in Mean Streets. With snatches of brilliance and invigoration, it also had meandering, over done bits like Keitel and his friends prolonged cackling. Nonetheless, Scorsese fans will appreciate it's energy, and the flurry of imagery at the end did highlight to me the confusion of Catholic indoctrination. (I seem to have some heavy on the Catholicism flicks in the DVD player or late.) If you liked this one, also check out Boxcar Bertha.

'Mean Streets was just around the corner.' Directorial debut of Martin Scorsese and film debut of Harvey Keitel.
