A good early 1950 tys movie with good for the time special effects but the story line had some quircks

Noah's Ark for the early (Truman Administration) Space Age. The FX in the disaster sequence are good for the time. The acting is mostly bad, much of the story is laughable, and the backdrop at the conclusion looks like it was made for a junior high school play, but the film does deal with end-of-the-world issues and themes that are perennial staples of sci fi, and that, one hates to admit, mankind could actually face at any time. Still, overall, the movie only holds interest as a historic artifact of a simpler time.

The special effects are surprisingly good and the human drama is surprisingly bad. Rather the opposite of what one might have expected. I thought the flooding of Manhattan was excellent. The cast was lifted straight out of old Commedia stereotypes: the lead lovers, the young lovers, the doctor, and Scaramouche in a wheelchair. A bit disappointing.

An early entry in the scientific disaster movie category, the characters are cardboard-y but the rocketry employed isn't too bad for 1951. Horizontal launch ramps had been used for V-1's and a low cabin-to-tank ratio had been assumed since the V-2 (most of fuselage needed for fuel). That latter was due to the relative inefficiency of the fuel type; today we get better performance from cryogenic approaches, as with LOX... Neat to see this V-2 style attempt on film, though it would have been dangerous as hell.
