It may lack nuance, but presenting the film from Stewart's point of view makes the title explicit. Monsters aren't born, they're conditioned.

Becs D 31 Jul 2016

This film fails to be what it's potential is. Based on true events, the main character here is the best thing about the film, it felt so low budget that perhaps the grit of the crime was lost.

Despite a decent central/dual performance the facts on which this prison drama are based ensure you're more appalled by the prison governor and his officers' casual indifference rather than the vicious racism of a young man with an extremely troubled mind.

Mark Kermode 21 Jun 2014

An unsettling description of a brutal episode that, despite some awkwardness in approach, does its job with admirable sincerity.

David W 08 May 2015

Slow moving, turgid, predictable, facile character study. Though well intentioned the effort falls flat.
