This film is like if you took Bonnie and Clyde, took out alll of the romanticism, and had the film directed by John Cassavetes. Needless to say its a very naturalistic film that has no real plot or message behind it. Its about this young woman whom is essentially has a worthless existence. I love how Barbara Loden did not dramatize the actions of the characters, but rather lets it simply play out. The filmstock and sound only help this effort, and we really get an underappreciated film, that does not get the respect it deserves.

"Realism" doesn't entirely do justice to the world Wanda inhabits, which, for all the grit and grunge of its bars and diners and factory floors, is also a world of startling everyday beauty.

a very bleak and yet very intriguing debut for writer/director/ lead actress barbara loden, who was at the time elia kazan's wife. the film couldn't be more different in style from kazan's work; it's as minimalist as can be, shot in cinema verite style with improvised dialogue. the title character has no direction in life and seemingly wanders from one bad situation to another. at first i was frustrated with her and her inane actions but as the film went on i became more and more anxious for her welfare, especially after she falls in with a criminal who bullies her into assisting him in a bank robbery. loden has said she wanted to make 'bonnie and clyde' without the romanticism and that, coming from an impoverished background, she may well have ended up this way herself. kudos for her honesty and determination in getting this film made, with little to no support from her husband. and it's a pity she never made another film; she died of breast cancer in 1980

The most under viewed, but possibly important film of the 1970s New Hollywood movement. Influenced by french new wave cinema, it is quite possibly the most tragic and honest road movie you will ever see. It has a timeless quality, and one day will be recognised for the work of greatness it is.

Writer-director-actor Barbara Loden's 1970 feature has a wonderful, hard-won sense of everyday rapture.
