Walt & El Grupo (2008)

The year was 1941, and the world was on the brink of war. In an effort to improve relations between the Americas, the Roosevelt administration called upon one of Hollywood's most influential filmmakers to embark on a special goodwill tour. Written and directed by Theodore Thomas ("Frank and Ollie") and produced by Kuniko Okubo, the documentary WALT & EL GRUPO chronicles the amazing ten-week trip that Walt Disney and his hand-picked group of artists and filmmaking talent (later known as "El Grupo") took to South America at the behest of the U.S. Government as part of the Good Neighbor Policy.

An intriguing, little-known episode in Walt Disney's storied career is the subject of this film, which is powered by some great, never-before-seen footage of Disney himself. The material is presented without sensationalism, which does tend to make the doc a bit staid down the stretch, but the subject matter is enough to keep things interesting.

Brings a new meaning to "sentimental journey. Starts off strong informing the viewer of the days before the trip- the tension of pending war in Europe- the changing times at the studio- strikes and power plays. The need for creatiivity, the financial pressures of lost income and even Federal involvement as Uncle Sam will pay Walt for this trip to South America to generate some good will and counter growing NAZI influences. BUT the film gets bogged down with insider nostalgia, as this was a film made by Disney (company) insiders, and is more of a tribute to thier family members and while there are some genuines points to be made, gets lost in the "family" slide show.

Fascinating (albeit a bit long) documentary about Walt Disney (and El Grupo, his group of animators, artists, etc.) who were commissioned by the U.S. Government to go to Latin America on a "good will tour" to bolster support for the U.S. against Germany. The artwork done by El Grupo is amazing and the way the film documents the period with photographs, archival film footage and current images to note the changes is fantastic. Worth checking out for fans of Disney, but also for those interested in documentaries, art, Latin culture and history.

There’s a marked sense of retreat in this tale that’s never explored--everyone goes out of the way to remember the past through rose-colored specs.
