Vox Lux (2018)

In 1999, teenage sisters Celeste and Eleanor survive a seismic, violent tragedy. The sisters compose and perform a song about their experience, making something lovely and cathartic out of catastrophe — while also catapulting Celeste to stardom. By 2017, the now 31-year-old Celeste is mother to a teenage daughter of her own and struggling to navigate a career fraught with scandals when another act of terrifying violence demands her attention.

"Vox Lux" is very much an artistic statement, you are still fascinated by the director's approach, which takes risks that most artists would deem too outrageous to conceive on-screen -- it's just too bad that Corbet couldn't properly expand on them more.

The magic of the movie is exactly this: its grand ambitions, the way it reaches for the stars just as Celeste commands all her "little angels" to do.

Those who manage to take the message of redemption and loss of innocence that the film offers us will enjoy this psychedelic drama that although it is not a complete disaster can be a difficult work to appreciate. [Full Review in Spanish]

Corbet’s work is a big, sloppy wet kiss to all manner of rise-and-fall clichés. Yet it mostly works, with Corbet as eager to display his influences...as he is to prove he can handle his own gonzo-spectacle set-pieces.

Natalie Portman is as convincing a pop star icon as she is a legendary actor. Part of what makes Portman the most daring of performers is her wondrous ability to navigate a scene.
