For all the chaos and pain, it is weirdly romantic: a glorious tale of wish-fulfilment, confirming that writers really can attain self-validation through the pen.

Violette demonstrates how suffering produces great art, and that the artist isn’t the only one who suffers for it.

Another worthy biopic that suffers from the same problem that plague most biopics - despite excellent performances it never rises above the ordinary as a film.

Inkoo Kang 25 Jun 2014

Director Martin Provost's epic portrait of novelist Violette Leduc is so compelling, even thrilling, in its frank depictions of female sexual voracity, professional egotism and twisted variants on the Electra complex that it's easy to overlook his film's shaggy, uneven plotting.

Aine O'Connor 02 Oct 2014

Whilst requiring an investment of audience, it is full on without being emotionally draining and is a remarkable character study of a woman coming to terms with herself.
