Strong British gangster film, with the focus on a messy heist. Richard Burton dominates with his very domineering character, although there's a plethora of UK acting talent on show all doing their best to compliment the lead.

tough British gangster film. not a classic but certainly enough about it to keep viewer interested

Supported by a phalanx of Brit stalwarts mouthing Dick Clements' and Ian le Franais' hilarious RADA cocknese, Richard Burton's sadistic homo crime boss is a hodge-podge of Kray Kliches. Alongside the superb Get Carter, Villain looks pretty much like a big screen version of The Sweeney. For fans of inadvertent comedy only.

Mean as a rattlesnake, Burton's gangster at times walks a fine line between precise character study and unintentional parody. Tuchner's idea of the dark London underworld in contrast with conservative morality is a little one dimensional at times, which is where Burton's time to shine brings the picture up to the standards expected from this genre. Ian McShane has an early role as a streetwise type, mingling amongst the usual recognisable faces while looking like he might just crack under the intensity. Overlooked, which despite its flaws, is rather a shame.

After reading the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen's second volume of its Century series, I had to see who this Vic Dakin character was. 'Villain' was admittedly a bit of a surprise, with Richard Burton playing a sadistic (yet emotionally vulnerable, closeted homosexual) East End crime boss whose manic appetite for violence and chaos precludes him from sitting on his laurels. While not overly memorable, it made for a fun sit-through.
