Great film, best line "i'm a policeman, i have no feeling"

A very important film that made an impact on the correction of the law that was against homosexuality.Great script, great directing and great acting. It still seems very current now since it's a neverending battle for all who are mistreated.

The very fact that homosexuality as a condition is presented honestly and unsensationally, with due regard for the dilemma and the pathos, makes this an extraordinary film.

An interesting film. At the time this film was seen as very risky due to the fact it deals with homosexuality. The main plot involves lawyer Melville Farr (played by Dirk Bogarde). Although married Farr is secretly a homosexual. Farr becomes involved in a blackmail investigation after one of his fri...(read more)ends kills himself after being blackmailed due to them also being a homosexual. Farr then faces the decision of turning the blackmailers in (therefore ruining his career) or order them to keep quite, therefore becoming a blackmailer himself. At the time of release (1961) homosexuality was still illegal so obviously the film was considered quite ground-breaking. These days the film does seem a little dated, yet there is still a solid crime story in it.

Groundbreaking 1960's thriller that was the first film worldwide to mention the word homosexuality let alone explore it. Interesting as Bogarde himself didnt come out until after his death. Definitely one for both straights and gays to see. Great shots of London as a backdrop, especially by the river in Hammersmith!
