What a strance balance of tones Imamura favors. The movie is sold as a serial killer on the lam tale, but quickly grows tired of the conventions of a police hunt movie and becomes a strange, domestic dark comedy with a sympathetic overview of the murderer's life. Perhaps not entirely satisfying a crime film, it achieves merit through other avenues.

Beats Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer to the punch by a more than a few years. Ogata played Yukio Mishima a few years later. He sure is a brave soul.

An epic serial killer film that melds tabloid nonfiction and social critique of post WWII Japanese culture in a fluid punk rock style. The new Criterion transfer is beautiful.

It is based on a true story, but somehow it just didn't make any sense. It doesn't attempt to give any answers or insight into the killers motives and psyche, and maybe that's the intention of the director, I don't know. But in my opinion that doesn't make it a very good movie.
