Excellent and powerful film is extremely effective in its means of portraying a killer. Some of the murder scenes are some of the most realistic I have ever seen in a movie.

Iwao Enokizu is a con artist, a seducer of women, and a murderer, . What drives him to commit these crimes? Vengeance is Mine is an objective look at the inner workings of serial killer who is both charming and ruthless. Ken Ogata, who plays the charismatic Iwao, portrays the killer as a complex individual whose reasons for murder is left unexplained. The other characters are also very real and interesting. Imamura takes great interest in rot and decay of the contemporary Japanese household. At times this films feels like a documentary, which isn't surprising since it's based on a true story. However, Vengeance is Mine is rarely dull due to the pitch black humor Imamura gives his film.

Imagine Catch Me If You Can combined with Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer but not as well made as either of them with a horrible misplaced score that sounds as if it got ripped from some cheesy 60s cop/spy show. Ken Ogata is good as always but this movie had so much lost potential.

This is a searing, raw, uncompromising study of a disturbed, callous, opportunistic Japanese serial killer called Enokizu Iwao and it's based on a true story. Ken Ogata gives a truly chilling and convincing portrayal of a man with no conscience, at the same time giving his character great depth and complexity. What is most alarming about Ogata's character is that he has no conscience at all about his murders. It is just his nature to kill. Does he have such hatred for life that he is killing unoffending passers-by just to be hanged by the state? It's hard to describe a movie about a serial killer as showing a sense of taste but this one does. When Iwao forms a bond with an elderly woman whom he considers his "prison buddy" because she's been in jail, he decides to strangle her. When she walks unwittingly into a darkened room, we see him enter behind her with a rope. And that's it. Cut. And on to the next scene. Overall this is an untraditional violent, sensous and vastly entertaining movie for the serious filmgoer and it does not disappoint.
