Vagabond (1985)

Mona Bergeron is dead, her frozen body found in a ditch in the French countryside. From this, the film flashes back to the weeks leading up to her death. Through these flashbacks, Mona gradually declines as she travels from place to place, taking odd jobs and staying with whomever will offer her a place to sleep. Mona is fiercely independent, craving freedom over comfort, but it is this desire to be free that will eventually lead to her demise.

Telling the story of Mona, a woman doomed to an early grave because of the extreme form of freedom she embraces, Varda's astonishing work is poignant from start to finish.

I'm becoming a Varda fan after watching this film and Cleo de 5 a 7. Although I prefer Cleo, this one has it's merits. I like the style in which the story of Mona is told. It reminded me a bit of a French female version of On the Road. An example of what "freedom" really means and involves.

Well done visually and story telling wise, but not very engaging for almost 2 hours of wacky people on the road. Oh, and the fighting trees...what?

Vagabond doesn't ask its main character to explain herself, and that attitude makes all the difference.

a raw (early) european version of 'into the wild' having erased the search for meaning somewhat- interesting, painful at times and there is no happy ending, conventional happy ending at least. not mainsteam at all.
