Vagabond (1985)

Mona Bergeron is dead, her frozen body found in a ditch in the French countryside. From this, the film flashes back to the weeks leading up to her death. Through these flashbacks, Mona gradually declines as she travels from place to place, taking odd jobs and staying with whomever will offer her a place to sleep. Mona is fiercely independent, craving freedom over comfort, but it is this desire to be free that will eventually lead to her demise.

Here's a character who will stay with you for life. The English subtitled version delivers a powerful punch because there's not a lot of dialogue, and the photography is stunning.

Opening on a homeless girl frozen to death in a vineyard, this poetic road film jumps back in time to follow her & to also interview, documentary-style, those she came across in her final days. A dreary french film that is beautifully shot.

I'm becoming a Varda fan after watching this film and Cleo de 5 a 7. Although I prefer Cleo, this one has it's merits. I like the style in which the story of Mona is told. It reminded me a bit of a French female version of On the Road. An example of what "freedom" really means and involves.

Let's face it, you have to shift gears to watch French films. There just aren't any car chases. Or if there are, or if there are gun fights, the film probably sucks! But if you shift down, or can, you will recognize this as a great film. Ironically I think the vagabond girl does live by a rule, contra the title, at least one applied to others, a kind of Kantian categorical imperative that others should always do right by her without expecting or gettiing reciprocation or gratitude. That sounds ridiculous but I know a number of intelligent people, usually they are women for some reason, who live by that principle or one like it! It didn't work for the vagabond though. Varda draws this theme out so well, it is a great study of morals and their rejection or at least incomprehension in the face of them.
