Just days before Bernard Madoff captured headlines as the largest Ponzi schemer in U.S. history, Marc Dreier, a prominent Manhattan attorney, was arrested for orchestrating a massive fraud scheme that netted hundreds of millions of dollars from hedge funds. Brazen forgeries and impersonations branded the white collar crime spree remarkable. "Unraveled" is set in the purgatory of house arrest -- an Upper East Side penthouse -- where the Court has ordered Dreier confined until his sentencing day. The film weaves Dreier's struggle to prepare for the possibility of life imprisonment with first-person flashbacks, which reveal his audacious path of destruction. Destroyed by his own hubris, Dreier attempts to grasp his tragic unraveling. With unprecedented access, "Unraveled" exposes a mastermind of criminal deception.

Marc H. Simon's documentary has the thrust of a great American noir or black comedy.

He seems only sorry and remorseful because he got caught. 20 years in jail is a little lenient for a Ponzi scheme this size. Dreier probably deserved at least 40 years considering Madoff received 150 years for the same crime. The documentary is interesting overall: He deserves a little bit of credit for explaining every detail on camera, unlike Madoff who decided not to talk. Showing him under house arrest in his Manhattan penthouse, and showing him spending other people?s money on expensive toys is a bit spitting on the victims? faces. It is hard to find any pity for this crook.

In allowing Dreier to shape his own narrative, too many lame excuses are allowed to pass, as the financial schemer spins his own story dangerously close to self-pity.

It's a fascinating fishbowl in concept, yet Simon's storytelling is unevenly textured and oddly listless - fatal for a film about a banal document - pushing felon clock-watching to a known outcome.
