Over the course of one year, this film follows the life of an ordinary Pyongyang family whose daughter was chosen to take part in Day of the Shining Star (Kim Jong-il's birthday) celebration. While North Korean government wanted a propaganda film, the director kept on filming between the scripted scenes. The ritualized explosions of color and joy contrast sharply with pale everyday reality, which is not particularly terrible, but rather quite surreal.

These layers are visible especially because the film is so intently focused on Zin-mi, her fascinating face, her restrained gestures, her openness and also her caution, her obvious effort to please and her occasional and barely discernible frustration.

This smart, tense and gripping horror thriller is a refreshing change from the Hollywood schlock of recent times; to make it even more unique, it's a British -Iranian production. Directed and shot with an assured and confident manner, along with a cracking cast, the 80s political context and the Tehran suburbs, this is not only a captivating Iranian film, it's a very good horror film.

11/18/16 Netflix A fascinating, disturbing and detailed look at Communism and the Cult of Personality in North Korea. The school room scenes shows how children are indoctrinated at a very young age. The scenery is stark and it is interesting to see wide streets with little track. The film stays in an urban area and does not show life in rural areas which must be much harder. All in all kudos to the fil makers for opening a world we do not get much chance to see.
