Under the Sun (2015)

Over the course of one year, this film follows the life of an ordinary Pyongyang family whose daughter was chosen to take part in Day of the Shining Star (Kim Jong-il's birthday) celebration. While North Korean government wanted a propaganda film, the director kept on filming between the scripted scenes. The ritualized explosions of color and joy contrast sharply with pale everyday reality, which is not particularly terrible, but rather quite surreal.

It’s shocking and troubling, but it doesn’t add much to the reality we already know cruelly exists.

Both surreal and sinister, it feels like we are watching a real-life version of The Truman Show.

It's extraordinary how revealing Manskiy's film is even before he begins to include behind the scenes 'outtakes'...we come away with a portrait of a brainwashed people told what to do every waking moment since their births.

Godfrey Cheshire 05 Jul 2016

Although unintentionally funny throughout, its evocation of life in a totalitarian society is ultimately chilling. The happy picture the North Koreans struggle to present implies unfathomable depths of violence to the human spirit beneath its glossy surface.

Tim Grierson 26 Jul 2016

Daring and thought-provoking, director Vitaly Mansky's film uses one North Korean family to examine how everyone -- moviemakers, governments, even individuals -- contorts reality to fit specific purposes.
