Over the course of one year, this film follows the life of an ordinary Pyongyang family whose daughter was chosen to take part in Day of the Shining Star (Kim Jong-il's birthday) celebration. While North Korean government wanted a propaganda film, the director kept on filming between the scripted scenes. The ritualized explosions of color and joy contrast sharply with pale everyday reality, which is not particularly terrible, but rather quite surreal.

One of the most fascinating things about Under the Sun is the contradictory thoughts it inspires.

Usually, it never contains a little surprise that Under the Sun is by far more than what you expected. You just have seen it differently, that's how. Watch this film again and your opinion will probably change. Under the Sun is filled of goodies that you must have already needed to enjoy this movie.

Whilst I can see the academic value of this film - showing us parts of North Korea we wouldn't otherwise see and making it clear how much of it is scripted by the North Koreans - it rapidly becomes rather boring.
