An autistic child growing up in the 1940's and 50's with a mother who is bitter because her fear of success has denied to herself a possible career in opera. This anger translates into an over-protectiveness of her mentally ill daughter, even into the child's adulthood. But a loving sister, herself having an arm that is paralyzed, is a bastion against the limitations imposed by the mother and finally helps her sister to live a more full life.

This had some very fine performances and a sensitive treatment of the premise. There was a little too much going on for ninety minutes--and, deeply as I adore Teresa Stratas, it almost seemed like she needed her own movie. But the premise was interesting and is not often treated with such seriousness. I especially apprecated that it was not (Stratas notwithstanding) a thoroughgoing emotional potboiler.

In this powerful story of two sisters caught under the domineering authority of their self-absorbed mother, Megan Follows performance as an autistic woman was absolutely brilliant and nuanced in detail and accuracy. Amanda Plummer portrayed her strong and caring sister in an equally fascinating performance. Together both performances override the plot of the film and it can be classified as a chick flick.
