Trumbo (2007)

Through a focus on the life of Dalton Trumbo (1905-1976), this film examines the effects on individuals and families of a congressional pursuit of Hollywood Communists after World War II. Trumbo was one of several writers, directors, and actors who invoked the First Amendment in refusing to answer questions under oath. They were blacklisted and imprisoned. We follow Trumbo to prison, to exile in Mexico with his family, to poverty, to the public shunning of his children, to his writing under others' names, and to an eventual but incomplete vindication. Actors read his letters; his children and friends remember and comment. Archive photos, newsreels and interviews add texture.

Bryan Cranston was truly amazing. This is the biggest surprise Movie for me this year. And actually my favorite film so far this year. It has all the making of a wonderful film brilliantly shot great costumes funny sad and truly entertaining. Great acting by all a definite must-see for any film buff out there. I can't stress this enough go see this movie if you have the opportunity.

Truly the most realistic story of all the blacklisted film writers of the red scare in Hollywood, the paranoia that takes us all the way through it, and then enlightens us as to how it ends. An excellent script, superbly acted, directed.and edited. Cranston is at peak performance here and captures it all. A special applause to John Goodman who never fails to thrill us in whatever role he plays. You don't want to miss this one.

I love Hollywood blacklist stories, and this is one of the best. The screenwriter of Spartacus had to write under another name to hide that he was blacklisted.

Fueled by Bryan Cranston's superb performance and an unwillingness to shy away from the ugly side of history, Trumbo honors a very brave man and sheds some light on how the world can be protected far more efficiently if those of influence possessed the same humanity they are accusing others of lacking.
