Tristana (1970)

As a young woman, Tristana is orphaned and taken under the guardianship of Don Lope, a respected member of the community, who takes advantage of his innocent charge. When Tristana falls in love with artist Horacio, she must learn to be more assertive in order to achieve independence from her nefarious guardian, or her blossoming relationship with Horacio is doomed.

Most of this is pretty dull going and when the dullness is relieved it is only with Bunuel's grotesque symbolism.

This film is an incredible critique of the amoralists -- the truth seekers and the religious zealots who seek to suck their profits. Deneuve is really fine here -- perhaps her best role as the innocent who is eventually compromised because of her lower class, innocence and inherent morality.

A later Bunuel film that's a bit more uneven than his master-strokes, but it's strong thematic material, restrained surrealism and a deservedly ominous ending amount to make Tristana a very potent art house release for the 70s
