Tough Guys (1986)

Harry Doyle and Archie Lang are two old-time train robbers, who held up a train in 1956 and have been incarcerated for thirty years. After serving their time, they are released from jail and have to adjust to a new life of freedom. and soon realize that they still have the pizzazz when, picking up their prison checks at a bank, they foil a robbery attempt.

The duo carry automatic glamour and nobility and the movie is an elaborate star turn, a chance to see them strutting their stuff one more time.

You know something's wrong when screen writers James Orr and Jim Cruikshank have to jury-rig a couple of chase plots, involving an over-the-hill hit man (Eli Wallach) and an aging detective (Charles Durning) just to move things along.

The director, Jeff Kanew, does not have as steady a hand as the old-timers. What he does have is sense enough to let our memories of all those Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas movies work on us.

C’est une sorte de baroud d’honneur en forme de comédie bêbête (pour ne pas dire un brin mongoloïde) pour nos deux retraités et bien sûr, ces deux géants du cinéma hollywoodien : Burt Lancaster et Kirk Douglas ! Sortis de taule 30 ans plus tard après un coup foireux, les voilà libérés dans ce monde des années 80 tout nouveau pour eux… et la difficile réinsertion pour de vieux taulards pourtant… pas encore prêts pour l’hospice ! alors qu’un autre vieux complètement à la masse (Eli Wallach !) en a déjà après eux… Ils sont sympathiques et tiennent encore la rampe mais l’indigence de ce scénar de nanar vite fait, mal fait, et torché n’importe comment ne leur rend pas honneur… et ne leur rend pas service non plus à ces trois-là. A dire vrai, ils se ridiculisent éhontément (et très régulièrement) et nous font de la peine ! enfin, ce nanar se traîne décidément trop pour qu’il parvienne à nous tenir éveillé… sans quelques grosses avances rapides (accélère, télécommande, accélère-moi ce navet de merde !).
