Okay, I admit I hadn't heard of Jules Dassin until he passed away. Then I read all about his films and I rented Topkapi. It's great absurdist fun, with a more or less gracious band of jewel theives, and things just keep going from bad to worse to worser. There reallty is never a dull moment.

Peter Ustinov is good as the reluctant spy--and nearly as reluctant jewel thief--but the rest of the cast is pretty unappealing and the film is at least 20 minutes too long. The excellent heist sequence makes up for a lot but, on the whole, "Topkapi" isn't as much fun as it ought to be. The ending confused me the first time I saw it because I thought they'd deliberately let the bird loose in the museum to set off the alarm system, then raced down to the police station to create an alibi. Shows how thick I am! I couldn't understand a single word Akim Tamiroff said in this movie.

Movies like "Ocean's 11" or "Mission Impossible" would not exist without their forebearers, "Topkapi" in particular with it's classic museum jewel heist scene at the end of the film, memorably done in almost complete silence. The rest of the film is fun too, particularly Peter Ustinov, but it's the final heist scene, brilliantly directed by blacklisted filmmaker Jules Dassin, that sets this one apart.
