Tense. Full of suspense and sporting a turley international cast. Well worth the watch. One of the best heist movies.

Between a 7/10 and 8/10, it's one of the very best heist films ever made, Topkapi provides the template for the many lighthearted capers that came later.

Jules Dassin crafted one of cinema's finest heist films in "Rififi". With "Topkapi" he certainly created a terrific caper flick that has proved to be incredibly influential to many filmmakers since. Melina Mercouri stars as a woman eager to steal a knife with emeralds worth a fortune - and is one rather horny cougar! Schell is the suave guy who has the know-how to pull it off. Robert Morley is the inventor for the group. And most impressive is Peter Ustinov, in an Academy Award winning turn, as the schmo - the unlikeable guy being used by the group to get their plan accomplished. The police - who are not so dumb - are on their tales. Exciting, well filmed and well acted, "Topkapi" is no doubt a must watch from the 1960s.

Movies like "Ocean's 11" or "Mission Impossible" would not exist without their forebearers, "Topkapi" in particular with it's classic museum jewel heist scene at the end of the film, memorably done in almost complete silence. The rest of the film is fun too, particularly Peter Ustinov, but it's the final heist scene, brilliantly directed by blacklisted filmmaker Jules Dassin, that sets this one apart.
