There isn't a question in any of the filming; Ade's sense of representation is one of confident approximations. In sticking to a familiarly unquestioned sense of cinematic reality, she empties it of psychological reality; it's a movie with no inner life.

A masterpiece in absurdist comedy! Embracing human truths and all of its contradictions, this rarefied well-intentioned gem evokes the entire gamut of human emotions - joy, sadness, anger and frustration. Quirky, LOL-funny and heartbreaking, Toni Erdmann is that quintessential life-affirming family dramedy that asks some piercing existential questions without coming across as preachy and highfalutin. Extremely accessible to the mainstream and boasting stellar performances from its two leads (in particular the exceptional Sandra Huller), Erdmann is totally worth your time. All 162 minutes of it!

The film’s no-nonsense, visually plain documentary-style of shooting feels utterly appropriate to its sly evocation of the absurdities and banalities of modern life. Just brilliant.
