After yakuza boss Kurata dissolves his own criminal empire, a rival kingpin offers a position to Kurata's top operative, Tetsuya "Phoenix Tetsu" Hondo. When the fiercely loyal Tetsu declines, Otsuka taps unstoppable Tatsuzo the "Viper", a ruthless gun-for-hire, to assassinate him. As the Viper trails his target through the countryside, the agile Phoenix Tetsu grows concerned that one of his former associates has betrayed him.

Not as zany and surreal as Branded to Kill, but still pretty good.

The story doesn't always make total sense, but the visuals and the attitude more than make up for it. For fans of pure Japanese cinema, this is unmissable.

this is pop-art surrealism meets the gangster genre. never mind that the story makes no sense, characters appearing randomly only to leave immediately after. one memorable seen is a single shot of a man who says 'is this some practical joke?' addressed to no-one and he never appears after. great use of colour and the film shots are interesting, though chaotic. its as though suzuki deliberately ordered his shots to baffle the audience. worth the watch for its artistic merits, and fun soundtrack.

Equal Parts Yakuza Movie and 1950's MGM Musical = Pure Delirium. An absolute delight to watch, given the colors in it.

This is just about the best movie ever made. It's both pop and poetic, a kind of Yakuza musical that's also a burlesque of American action films. And it's got cool in spades.
