After yakuza boss Kurata dissolves his own criminal empire, a rival kingpin offers a position to Kurata's top operative, Tetsuya "Phoenix Tetsu" Hondo. When the fiercely loyal Tetsu declines, Otsuka taps unstoppable Tatsuzo the "Viper", a ruthless gun-for-hire, to assassinate him. As the Viper trails his target through the countryside, the agile Phoenix Tetsu grows concerned that one of his former associates has betrayed him.

The story doesn't always make total sense, but the visuals and the attitude more than make up for it. For fans of pure Japanese cinema, this is unmissable.

This isn't the type of movie I end up finding on my own. This was loaned to me by a friend who thought I may find it at least interesting. I had a little trouble following a few of the early events, as it seemed to have a lot to do with japanese style mafia dealings. I'd probably 'get' that aspect more on the second viewing. What really shoved this movie from a 3.5 to a 4 star for me were the incredibly unique sets, the awesome angles from which the film was shot, and the fantastic use of colors in a few very specific scenes. Its really cool seeing these older movies filmed in Japan because the films are always shot in 'true' environments, not gigantic sets created for the movie. The final scene is so great.

As far as a Sean pick goes this is pretty good. The fact that there is no one bathing in fecal matter gets it three stars automatically. The coolest thing in this movie is the music they play every time the drifter is in the shot.

Makes no damn sense at all. Pretty colors though. This was like a Daniel Clowes yakuza comic with more than a few pages missing.
