After yakuza boss Kurata dissolves his own criminal empire, a rival kingpin offers a position to Kurata's top operative, Tetsuya "Phoenix Tetsu" Hondo. When the fiercely loyal Tetsu declines, Otsuka taps unstoppable Tatsuzo the "Viper", a ruthless gun-for-hire, to assassinate him. As the Viper trails his target through the countryside, the agile Phoenix Tetsu grows concerned that one of his former associates has betrayed him.

A free jazz gangster film. Highly stylistic , but not annoying, which is quite an extrodinary feat! Which ends up with a film that is a visual treat. This film should make a regular film goer happy and the art film goer happy!!!

There is a fine line that directors must balance upon when it comes to style over content. Tokyo Drifter has numerous moments where you can almost feel ringmaster Seijun Suzuki faltering, whipping, & attempting to tame his beasts of sound, colour, and Nikkatsu-scope. For the most part he is successful, yet the story does on occasion become lost and things only really settle about halfway through, allowing one to enjoy the world of a reformed Yakuza, drifting through Japan essentially awaiting his own execution. Though slightly dated, the film is groundbreaking and one could easily make comparisons to the present-day work of Wong Kar-Wai with its dominant themes of music & colour. Yet it is the decision to tell great parts of the action through reaction that work so well. One doesn?t witness the face of the antagonist but merely the response; the overarching sense of deception that is created is astonishing.

Mostly hilarious, with a completely unintelligible plot, wacky editing and (fantastically) terrible dialogue and theme song(s), made colourful by 60's style set. Outrageous action scenes top if off. Just make sure you're not trying to take this film seriously...
